Tricky - Hell is Around the Corner
I checked out Maxinquaye from the library my sophomore year of high school. I also checked out Massive Attack’s 100th Window and Mezzanine albums. Trip Hop, that Bristolian interpretation (or answer, rather) to American hip hop. Dark and brooding, with elements of dub, rock, soul and hip hop, I was really blown away by Tricky’s lyricism and production (particularly his then girlfriend, Martina Topley-Bird’s unusual but beautiful voice).
Not to mention that dope sample of a sample (Portishead’s Glory Box which sampled Issac Hayes’ Ike’s Rap II).
